Three Developmental Quartebacks for the 2016 NFL Draft

This past season was a clear roller coaster for Falcons Quarterback Matt Ryan. After a season full of odd plays, inconsistency, and considerable pounding, I won’t say that Ryan is done. He still can produce and I feel confident that he will in 2016. Even if he does, it’s never a bad time to have a plan in place. Backup Quarterback Sean Renfree has backed up for some time now; but it would be wise to look in another direction for the back-up quarterback position. Here are three quarterbacks to consider in the upcoming NFL Draft. 



Stanford Quarterback Kevin Hogan:

For the past four seasons, Stanford trotted out the steady QB and it has definitely paid off. Hogan has produced 75 touchdowns and 29 interceptions as well as end his career third in career passing yards at Stanford.

Hogan has NFL size at 6’3 218 pounds as well as consistency as a winner by going 36-10 as a starter at Stanford. Also, keep in mind that his time in Palo Alto was in the midst of playing in a pro-style offense. He needs some work with mechanics as well as footwork but as a developmental guy, he has somewhat of a window. 

Arkansas Quarterback Brandon Allen:

Allen didn’t have a lot of hoopla going into Senior Bowl week but he made enough of an impression to garner some attention as a late round draftee. The growth of Allen was seen as he saw a spike in his completion rate from 56% in 2014 to 66% this past season. Allen has an NFL arm and pretty decent size. Grabbing Allen may ultimately provide a reliable back-up who can sit, study, and pick the brains of Matty Ice. 

Mississippi State Quarterback Dak Prescott:

Prescott’s draft stock is pretty broad. He can very well go in the fourth round and he could be still waiting for a selection well into the seventh. The Senior Bowl week was critical for him as he showed some glimpses. Prescott tossed for 3,793 and 29 scores and he also completed 66% of his passes which is probably the bigger stat.

He is a project no doubt. Also, I’ve seen enough from Prescott to come to conclusion that Prescott can be a quarterback who so happens to be athletic and not just an athletic, “run first” QB.
